One of my favorite housewarming gifts was a cow skull, and I remember sitting on my couch sketching it over and over again as it hung over my fireplace. There was something about its presence there that kept drawing me back – the way it commanded attention without being morbid, the stark beauty of its form.
I found this meditative flow when creating the concept for this piece. The skull had been speaking to me through all those sketches, and when I finally decided to paint it, the vision transferred easily onto canvas. It was a mostly effortless process – one of those rare pieces that flowed out of me like it was always meant to be.
The striking contrast between the skeletal form and the vibrant crown of flowers that adorns it came naturally, symbolizing something I've always felt but couldn't quite name. The dark background highlights the intricate details of both elements, creating that coexistence of mortality and renewal that feels so honest to me.
This piece pulled me further into artwork that is a true reflection of who I am – someone who finds beauty in contrasts, who sees hope blooming even in stark places. It's about the cycles of life and the resilience of nature, but mostly it's about listening when something keeps calling to you from across the room.
